Who we welcome

Eligibility & Screening

House of Comfort is open to adults who need stable, supportive community housing. We review every applicant as an individual — not just a file.

Who We Welcome

We serve adults across North Texas who need a safe, furnished, community-based home with on-site support.

Veterans

Veterans of any branch seeking stable housing in North Texas. Referrals accepted from VA offices, VSOs, social workers, and community agencies.

Seniors & Adults

Adults who need assisted or independent living support in a warm, community-based setting — not a nursing home or clinical facility.

Individuals in Transition

People rebuilding stability after hardship. We believe in second chances and review every applicant on their own merits.

Basic Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for placement at House of Comfort, applicants generally must meet the following:

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Able to live in a shared community home setting
  • Not currently in an acute medical or psychiatric crisis requiring clinical care
  • Willing to follow house rules and community guidelines
  • Able to provide identification and basic intake information
  • Referred by a VA office, social worker, case manager, or self-referred

What We Are — and What We Are Not

House of Comfort is a community-based residential home. We are not a nursing home, assisted living facility, treatment center, substance abuse program, or clinical facility. Residents who require 24-hour skilled nursing care or active clinical treatment will need a different level of care. We are happy to help connect individuals with appropriate resources.

  • Not a nursing home
  • Not an assisted living facility (licensed)
  • Not a treatment or rehabilitation center
  • Not a substance abuse program
  • Not a psychiatric or clinical facility

Individual Review Process

We do not automatically disqualify applicants based on background. Every situation is reviewed individually.

We understand that many people seeking housing have complicated histories. A prior felony conviction or past eviction does not automatically disqualify an applicant from living at House of Comfort. We review each case on its own merits, considering the nature of the offense, time elapsed, demonstrated change, and current circumstances.

Certain offenses that pose a direct safety risk to other residents may result in denial. Our team will communicate clearly and respectfully throughout the review process.

Factors we consider

  • Nature and severity of the offense or eviction
  • Time elapsed since the incident
  • Evidence of rehabilitation or changed circumstances
  • Current support network and stability
  • Ability to live safely in a shared community setting
  • References from case managers, social workers, or VA staff

The Screening Process

Here is what to expect when you or someone you know applies for placement.

1

Initial Inquiry or Referral

Contact us by phone, email, or through our referral form. Provide basic information about the applicant — name, contact details, and a brief description of their situation.

2

Intake Conversation

A member of our team will reach out to discuss the applicant's needs, background, and current circumstances. This is a conversation — not an interrogation.

3

Individual Review

We review any background information provided, including prior felonies or evictions, on a case-by-case basis. We may request documentation or references from a case manager or VA contact.

4

Placement Decision

We communicate our decision promptly and respectfully. If placement is not possible, we do our best to connect the individual with other appropriate resources in North Texas.

5

Move-In

Approved residents can move in with just themselves — the room is furnished and all utilities are included from day one.
